Real name: Zev Eisenberg, Gadi Mizrahi
wolflambmusic.com

Some wild extremes make up the whole that is Wolf + Lamb. Extrovert and introvert, vegan and carnivore, cancer survivor and social saboteur – you’d expect no partnership like this could last for long. But for over a decade, these differences have only sparked the seismic energies that Zev and Gadi bring to dance music. They’ve never cared much for current convention – for being “fast enough”, “hard enough”, or “cool enough” to win favor with the party culture hype machine. They play passionate music that moves hearts, and not just feet. From their subterranean throwdowns in their Brooklyn corner known as the Marcy Hotel, to the 2005 founding and continued expansion of their family of labels, amid the warm winters and electric environs of Miami – it’s always been about the two of them enjoying life, learning to live with each other, and making friends and fans that become part of the family.

And of course, they think the game is best when it’s not taken too seriously – a bit of foolishness, on the sly, colors everything about Wolf + Lamb. House music maestros and hip-hop horticulturalists; desert communitarians and urban nomads; savvy entrepreneurs and autonomous anarchic creators, Gadi and Zev shift seamlessly between these roles. As music makers, the two draw as much inspiration from their label cohorts as they do from each other, which makes for a definitive dose of the Wolf + Lamb aesthetic in their upcoming album, to be released in summer of 2012.

From Zev’s savvy design and production, to Gadi’s talent for sniffing out path breaking artists to bring into the fold, there’s a knack they have for making it all hold together. And that means Wolf + Lamb is a home to the artists that thrive on its mantra: Deniz Kurtel, Nicolas Jaar, No Regular Play, Soul Clap, Voices of Black, Tanner Ross, Slow Hands, and more. For Gadi and Zev, nothing could be better than being in this bustling world among these friends, orchestrating the sounds and sights of the moment, and always looking forward to what’s yet to come.

Resident Advisor: Sasha
About, Biography, Events, Charts, Tracks, DJ Feed, Photos, RA News, RA Editorial

The best DJs know that Djing is first about being able to read people and then about being able to tap into that human experience and take it on a journey. Sasha has always been noted for being a master at this, and although his style is described as “Progressive Trance” with a good presence of House and break beat elements; his music has always reached beyond those record store titles, thus separating him from his contemporaries. Sasha creates and plays music that gives emotion a chance to speak. It is this universal appeal that he has tapped into that has established his strong fanbase around the globe.

This ability to capture sounds on a universal level was most recently called upon when he was asked to write all the music for Sony Playstation¹s biggest game release of 1999, “Wipeout 3″. Sasha wrote 5 original tracks to soundscape the game. “Wipeout 3″ won not only the best racing game award, but best game of the whole show.

His special touch has also recently been called upon by The Chemical Brothers, who singled him out as the only artist asked to remix a track (“Out Of Control”) from their new album. “I just dubbed it out to a style like I would play, the elements and sounds that the Chems used were so good that I didn’t want to change them at all”, Sasha reports on making the mix. Sasha’s resume of chart topping remixes also earned him a request from Madonna in 1998 when he was asked to remix “Ray Of Light” and “Substitute For Love/ Drowned World”.

Do not be mistaken, this kind of recognition does not happen overnight. Born and raised in a small town in Wales, Sasha was exposed to Motown records when he was just a baby and it was in the home that his talent for playing the piano was developed. His first exposure to house music was at Manchester’s Hacienda; just as dance music exploded into the summer of love. This impact encouraged his move from Wales to Manchester. His first exploration into Djing was when a DJ in a local pub announced he was looking for people to play club dates. Sasha volunteered and now says that he “had about 30 records and basically just blagged it”.

After honing his deck technique, Sasha’s first big break came when he was offered a residency at Stokes legendary club Shelly¹s. When all the other DJ’s were playing US House, Sasha’s style was much more uplifting, and he encapsulated clubbers with his mixture of piano led Italian House whilst playing acapella tracks over the top. This combination alongside a wide variety of anthems kept dancefloors full and elevated Sasha to hero status.

Shelly¹s was the launch pad for the residency at Renaissance, where Sasha created his niche and helped forge a new style in UK house music. At Renaissance two major things happened; Sasha mixed the first ever UK DJ mix album and he met John Digweed which cemented the partnership known as “Northern Exposure”. Over the past couple of years, Sasha and John have played together on five continents, have mixed 3 “Northern Exposure” albums which have sold to over 1 million people worldwide.

This special brother like relationship that Sasha and Digweed have on the decks, is what landed them the monthly residency at New York¹s “Twilo”, following in the footsteps of Vasquez and Tenaglia. This residency reached cult status in New York, until the closing of Twilo in 2001.

Although Sasha has clearly reached a celebrity status, it¹s his generous personality, his love for his peers and of course his completely candid humour that has enabled him to maintain such a likeable high profile in the often-fickle world of club culture. Always one to share what comes his way, Sasha invited long time friend and collaborator BT to take part in what he called “one of the most amazing musical experiences in my life”. He is referring to his experience out at Peter Gabrielle¹s Real World studio in 1998 where Sasha explains in a mixer article, “we were in there for a week and were just going to do one track (during Real World¹s annual recording week where artists from all over the world are invited to Bath to record at the famous studios). “There were so many talented musicians around and the vibe down there was incredible. People were walking in, hitting things, strumming things, and slapping their goats! There were mad African people everywhere. We ended up recording five tracks and finishing four”.

Since then of course, Sasha has gone from DJ to superstar status in America, where “Sarsha” is a household name for many teenagers and his and John’s residency has continued to provide the launchpad for British dance music into New York and beyond. The sound of Twilo: deep, pumping late night .h.o.u.s.e. is encapsulated on ‘Communicate’, Sasha and John’s joint mix album for INCredible. Modern club anthems like Trancesetters ‘Roaches’ and Trisco’s Muzak all blended in the late night, early morning way that New York’s clubbers have come know and love.

For Sasha, music is his first love, and what gives him a buzz is being able to share his music with others. From his presence at those all too talked about after hour parties where his special impromptu sets are heard, to his signature always present child like antics that leave people wondering if he has modelled his life after Peter Pan, to his DJ sets at clubs around the world, all lined with the backdrop of his own productions, Sasha leaves trails of memories, melodies and stories wherever he goes. These are the things that have been, and will continue to be remembered and passed on for years. And that is what legends are made of.

How dance label Crosstown Rebels bounced back

Hit three times by its distributors collapsing, Damian Lazarus’s Crosstown Rebels label could have gone under. Instead they’ve just had their biggest year yet

Michaelangelo Matos

Thursday 14 April 2011 18.00 EDT

Independent record companies routinely have distribution problems, but few have had the kind of bum luck the electronic label Crosstown Rebels encountered in its first few years. Founded in 2003 by London by the producer-DJ Damian Lazarus, whose sets tend to lean toward the dark and mysterious (see his Fabric 54 mix from last year), Crosstown Rebels had just shipped a Supreme Bachelors 12″ in 2003 when Ideal, the label’s distributor, went into liquidation. “We were owed a few grand from the sales of those first three releases,” Lazarus says today. “Maybe I should have read the signs then.”

Maybe, but it’s hard to imagine that could have prepared him for both of CR’s successive distributors, Intergroove UK and Amato, folding within a year of each other (at the ends of 2006 and 2007, respectively). Between them, they owed Lazarus’s label £30,000. “I came very close to packing it in then and there,” Lazarus says. “When this happens to you three times, and there are few signs on the horizon that things can improve – except your music – you really have to take a take a deep breath and ask yourself if your work is really worth this kind of aggravation.”

Four years on, the answer is a resounding yes. Crosstown Rebels’ roster rallied, forgiving Lazarus’s debts to them. He liquidated the company, using the proceeds (and borrowing some more) to repurchase the label’s name. Investors in Los Angeles injected cash to reboot the label (Lazarus himself now lives in LA). The cure took: Crosstown Rebels had its most bullish year yet in 2010, issuing big DJ favorites by Deniz Kurtel (Yeah), Maceo Plex (the smart Stevie Wonder reworking Vibe Your Love), and Art Department, whose Without You was Resident Advisor’s track of the year and Mixmag’s No 2.

This year, Crosstown Rebels is taking it from the floor to the world, having issued sharp albums by Plex (Life Index) and Kurtel (Music Watching Over Me) in February and March, respectively. The big one, though, is Art Department’s The Drawing Board, out at the end of this month. Many times, dance artists try to “diversify” on their albums, often with iffy results. Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White, the Toronto house veterans behind Art Department, do no such thing: The Drawing Board plays like themes and variations on Without You. Together, its back-to-basics house tracks, at once bubbling and sinister, and White’s mournful vocals (very roughly, imagine Ian Curtis recording for Trax Records) grab and hold and don’t let go.

“I had known Jonny and Kenny for some years,” Lazarus says of his new stars. “[I] had been waiting for them to get their shit together so that they could join the label.” Indeed, that sense of familiarity imbues all of Crosstown Rebels’ releases. “I do try my hardest to really get to know every artist I work with,” Lazarus says. “I want the artists on my label to feel like they have a support network, a family of like-minded people who care and look out for each other. The first moment I met Deniz, even without hearing a note, I knew I wanted to work with her, and when Maceo Plex first handed me his first track writing house music as opposed to tougher techno, I felt that he could soon become an album artist.”

That tradition will continue into the year, as Jamie Jones, one of Lazarus’s signature artists (his 911 was one of the 2008 singles that signaled Crosstown Rebels’ return) is due for an album later in the year as well. “I don’t want to say I had a big masterplan,” Lazarus shrugs. “All in all, I’m pretty happy I continued.”

Resident Advisor: Phonique

After moving to Berlin in the mid 90’s, Michael Vater a.k.a Phonique was on the go like few others in Berlin. His successful parties and club nights got much love and paved him the way to become one of the nice guys in Berlin’s nightlife. First he only organized parties, after a while he started to DJ himself: “DJ Phonqiue” was born.

Since January ‘98, Phonique continued to bring previously lesser known DJs and producers to Berlin for his club nights and parties, presenting many strong nights with DJs like Glen Gunner (Street Corner Symphony/Block 16), Lil Tony (Nu Spirit Helsinki/Guidance), Alexkid (F-Com/Ovum), Llorca (F-Com/Brique Rouge), Joakim (Tigersushi) or Ivan Smagghe (Blackstrobe/Volga Select).

In the meantime, Phonique continued to develop his “freestyle” profile. His guests were treated to a splendid mix from Hip-Hop via Breakbeats to Old School and Drum‘n’Bass. Just about anything was possible in between, as long as the tracks had the necessary “type of groove”. He invited DJs like LTJ Bukem, Richard Dorfmeister and many more.

Traveling the world and playing clubs in Sao Paulo, Helsinki, Paris, London, Marseille, Vienna, Brussels, San Francisco, Prague, Tel Aviv, just to name a few destinations, Phonique never forgot his Berlin base. Just like his residencies at Tresor and Pfefferbank (among others), where he brought his ‘Club Paris’ evening to life, with guests like Pepe Bradock, DJ Deep, Jori Hulkkonen and I:Cube.

From time to time Phonique, together with his partner Kiki, presented their QuadroPhoniquekikz’ on four turntables, eventually releasing their first ‘QuadroPhoniquekikz’ mix-CD in 2002 on Komfort Musik.

His first two 12″ were released on Martin Landsky’s Intim Recordings, and from then on Phonique released on labels like Komfort Musik (Berlin), Seasons (USA), Brique Rouge (Paris) and Crosstown Rebels (London), but mainly on Steve Bug’s own Poker Flat and Dessous.

His first remix (for Doctorolive) was released on French label Bazoline. After remixes for Frankman (Draft/Fm), Soulcamp (Soulcamp), Le Tone (Naive), Funky Transport (Brique Rouge), Tonic Agents (Highgrade), Detroit Grand Pubahs (Poker Flat) and Erlend Oye (!K7) he even remixed Germany’s pop phenomena “Rosenstolz”.

Besides Phonique’s remixing talents and DJing with vinyl and CDs, he also started to edit tracks so they made more sense for his DJ-sets. When Jazzanova found out about this, they asked him to do some for their own use. So Phonique worked out some edits, partly with his buddy Dixon. Edits for Georg Levin and DJ Spinna, remixes for Georg Levin and Sirius Mo even got released on Jazzanova’s Sonar Kollektiv label.

2004 then was a very successful year for Phonique.

His second 12″ on Dessous “The Red Dress” climbed on top of the official German Club Charts (DCC), “The Red Dress” became one of the hottest tracks being played by almost every key DJ in Europe. He worked on Erlend Oye’s incredibly successful DJ-Kicks (!K7) in technicals, mixing and consulting and actually played several tour dates with Erlend all across Europe.

In Autumn 2004 then his debut album “Identification” for Dessous was released, featuring collaborations with Paris The Black Fu, Erlend Oye, Alexander East (Minneapolis), Ian Whitelaw (Glasgow) and Dixon (Sonar Kollektiv). With amazing international feedback, even a number one chart entry on Itunes’ dance download charts it turned out to be Phonique’s breakthrough success.

Massive Video play on German MTV’s renowned “Spin” and on Viva Plus of “For The Time Being” with Erlend Oye took his popularity to another level. The 12″ release “99 & a half” feat. Alexander East featured one of the best I:Cube remixes in recent days and went to become a club hit immediately. The album track “You, That I’m With” feat. Ian Whitelaw was licensed to South Africa even pre-release, where Ian Whitelaw’s last track (with Alexkid ) had also been the club hit of 2003/4.

Also the single “For The Time Being” with remixes by Alexkid and Motorcity Soul received massive positive feedback, followed by a remix by Sasse (Moodmusic), even leading to a future collaboration with Rodney Hunter (G-Stone) as they found out that their creativity combined would go beyond the framework of a remix and demanded proper recognition, as on a track for the next album.

Even for Sven Väth “Identification” was a highlight, thus he asked Phonique for an exclusive track for “Cocoon Compilation E”.

With the closing of Tresor in 2005 Phonique lost one of his favorite residencies, playing the Bonito House Club once a month. Since his very first Tresor Wednesday night gig of February ‘99, he was fired up about the 600-1400 people crowd that would not stop dancing up until late Thursday morning….

Since Berlin’s nightlife is subject to rapid change, Phonique’s residences change alike. Currently you can meet him mainly at Weekend, F.U.N. Crew’s incredible venue with a view over all of downtown Berlin at Alexanderplatz. Their second compilation on Fine/ Four Music will be supported by Phonique’s track ‘’Bee”. Even though release is not expected before early 2006, the track already gets massive support by colleagues like Trevor Jackson (Output) and M.A.N.D.Y (Get Physical).

Recently Phonique asserted his recognition as one of the high profile remixing artists in the dance world, letting Morcheeba’s former vocalist benefit from his talents on a remix of her upcoming solo project “Skye” (Atlantic/ Warner).

Phonique mostly works with Alex Krüger (Dub Taylor / Korsakow / Tigerskin) for his productions/remixes, but from time to time he is cooperating with other artists or musicians like Steve Bug, David Duriez & Phil Weeks, Martin Landsky or Meitz.

Already being recognized internationally as one of the leading forces behind deep and forward thinking club music and commercial productions alike, this one will take it to the next level.

Through a leaking bodily cavity resembling the pork found in Chinese restaurants, Satan shat out a crystal beaming with glowing red embers. This crystal matured into the fetus of Seth Troxler. Seth was placed on earth as a weeping fetus, the sound of inevitability. As he grew, his ancestral roots took on a magnetic channeling power, more than his feeble mind could ever consciously fathom. As a result, he became capable of creating some of the world’s finest and most intuitive dance cuts, including releases and remixes on Spectral, Wagon Repair, Crosstown Rebels, M_nus, Bpitch Control, Circus Company, Items and Thing, Raum… Musik, FXHE, Esperanza, Leftroom,Adults Only and Beretta Grey. His music has been featured on Audions Fabric mix, The Circo Loco 10 comp mixed by Arpiar, and Matthew Dears new Get Physical compilation.

Seth’s DJ career started in Detroit in 2002 at the age of 16 as a frequent Dj at Detroit club The Works and as a clerk at Detroit’s famous Melodies and Memories record store. With these experiences Seth gained a preternatural understanding of rave, and dance music history, that now allows him to conjours up mixes and tracks like Botticelli conjoured his Venus. He has played many outstanding international gigs, notably Fabric, Tenax, MUTEK, , Panorama Bar, Watergate, Robert Johnson, Detroit Electroinc Music Festival, The Rex, Fuse, Avalon and The End Up. As well as being a resident at Berlin’s legendary Club der Visionäre. Seth is also a bi monthly party host, and resident DJ at Berlin Weekend Club, and Cityfox’s new club Alte Borse in Zurich, w/ friends Ryan Crosson and Shaun Reeves. Before relocating to Berlin he was also a key conceptual force behind America’s “Tesh Club” parties with partners in crime Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtiss. Under the name Visionquest, they have hosted the annual “Need is Say More” (old miami) party which has become DEMF’s most anticipated after hours since it’s conception 2006.

His influences include the chirping of crickets, the whirring of space ships, and the sweet sounds of whistling voodoo magic. However, Seth draws the majority of his inspiration from Robert Downey Jr., and the idea of releasing the shackles that bind Downey so he can finally do heroin in peace.
