Tensnake – BBC Essential Mix 2013

Tensnake – BBC Essential Mix 2013. Download and stream full MP3 set to your desktop and mobile smartphone. Full bio and tracklist provided. Released February 16, 2013. (2013-02-16)

Introduced by host Pete Tong as “the man who brought the disco back to the dancefloor”, Hamburg’s Tensnake stepped up for the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix over the weekend. With the Northern Hemisphere still shivering through the tail-end of winter, the producer otherwise known as Marco Niemerski brings some trademark sunshine onto the show. From the ecstatic rush of Coma Cat to his ‘90s house throwbacks Something About You and Mainline, as a producer Niemerski does ‘feel-good’ like a pro.

“I think this mix is really nice, deep and groovy,” he says at the top of the show. “It starts quite slowly; a bit of disco in the beginning, and then it switches a little bit, more house-y and clubby stuff. It also features two unreleased tracks of mine off my forthcoming album.” Niemerski confirms that the album is finished and slated for a 2013 release. Tensnake also remains busy on the remixing front, with credits for Lana Del Rey, Friendly Fires, Little Dragon, Mark E, Aloe Blacc and many more. Hit play and let the good times roll.

“I really do enjoy instrumental music, but I have to admit I love pop music,” Niemerski told inthemix in 2011. “For me, a great song has to have a great voice in there. I don’t listen so much to lyrics. For me, the voice is the instrument, and it adds colour to the whole production. I think a voice makes it complete. I remember six or seven years ago, with pure electro music or minimal, you would rarely hear any vocals, just short sample snippets. It’s really joyful to have vocals in the clubs again!”

No Regular Play – Inspirado Radio Mix 2013

No Regular Play – Inspirado Radio Mix 2013. Download and stream full MP3 set to your desktop and mobile smartphone. Full bio and tracklist provided.

“Scanning the airwaves for their early influences and inspirations, the Brooklyn duo present a radio-style mix that charts their diverse musical background – flipping between Madlib and Miles Davis, Battles and Bjork.

Both accomplished musicians in their own right, Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn flirted with various genres and musical forms before falling in love with the innovative electronic music championed by Wolf + Lamb.

Friends since the age of 8, the pair were first influenced by iconic jazz and hip-hops acts in the vein of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Miles Davis. Dedicated to music, Greg started playing trumpet at local jazz clubs in his teenage years and together the pair travelled to Cuba’s Havana to study Afro-Cuban rhythm, music and culture.

Around 2008, the duo met Wolf + Lamb founders Zev and Gadi, and immediately began a fruitful musical and personal relationship. No Regular Play was the result and now the group’s first album, Endangered Species, has been released to much acclaim.

Taking them right back to their musical roots, this is what the guys had to say about their mix:

‘This is the first mix in a series we hope to continue called, Inspirado Radio. The idea was to include music that we listened to while growing up that really inspired us and shaped our collective musical taste and style before we started producing on our own.

‘We wanted to include many different genres of music, so we thought we would make the mix sound as if you’re tuning through the radio and landing on different stations: jazz, hip-hop, oldies, college radio, etc. This also gave us a chance to do some fun radio drops :)

‘Hope you enjoy!’”

No Regular Play are a duo equally at home in the rehearsal rooms of Julliard as in the main room of Fabric. Emotive and unapologetically organic, their fluid approach unites more than a lifetime of influences.

Their impressive live show, which features Paulus’ inimitable trumpet and vocals alongside DeBruyn’s masterful manipulation of the rhythm and soundscapes bridges the gap between the indie arena and the heartbeat of the dancefloor. Watch their set at Boiler Room Berlin http://www.youtube.com/embed/CS17vmYvWyI

Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn met as 8 year olds growing up in St. Paul, Minnesota, bonding over an early mutual love of hip-hop and jazz legends such as A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock. This deep-rooted connection allows them to understand each other in a rare and profound way.

Paulus performed trumpet at local jazz clubs in his teenage years and went on to study jazz/classical at the Manhattan School of Music. Together they later traveled to Cuba’s Havana to study Afro-Cuban rhythm, music and culture.

But the seeds of their evolution were really sewn in 2006 when they attended a Wolf + Lamb party in NYC that blew their minds. Thrown at the Marcy Hotel, a space featured in The Guardian newspaper, it propelled DeBruyn to join Paulus in Brooklyn and begin experimenting with electronic music. They naturally formed a very close musical and personal relationship with Zev and Gadi of Wolf + Lamb and their first output, a deep and cerebral string of EPs, was released on the W+L label in 2008 alongside artists such as Soul Clap and Nicolas Jaar.

No Regular Play became integral to the Wolf + Lamb family when they took up residence in the Marcy building, a melting pot for creative minds. This move allowed a more fluid approach to their productions and new collaborations were formed. Subsequent material from the duo has shown up on a slew of respected labels including No. 19 Music and Supplement Facts. Never to be tied to one breed or style, in 2012 they released the track “Rain (All Day)” on Cut Mistake Music, which was reconstructed and performed as a 25-minute piece by Paulus and his father for improvisation/ electronics with the Minnesota Orchestra.

Greg Paulus has also released solo material on Double Standard Records and Wolf + Lamb, respectively. He has worked and toured with critically acclaimed indie band Beirut and, more recently, Matthew Dear’s live band over the past two years.

The duo still watches over the infamous Marcy Hotel, and tour regularly performing their incredible live sets at some of the world’s most cutting-edge clubs. Fall 2012 will see the release of their debut album, “Endangered Species”, out on Wolf + Lamb Records. Typically jammed with new collaborations, the album features The Real Live Show, a New York based Hip-Hop collective, and Eliot Cardinaux, a fellow alumnus of Greg’s from the Manhattan School of Music. The album was mixed by Francis Harris and mastered by the legend, Joe Lambert, who has also worked with the likes of Animal Collective, Washed Out and Dirty Projectors. The project fully demonstrates their dexterity in creating depth, structure and rich song based formulas in the electronic realm.

Alejandra Iglesias was born in Santiago, Chile. Thanks to her mother’s influence, Dinky grew up playing the piano and listening to a lot of music. Since an early age she has studied several art forms and for many years trained as a professional dancer and choreographer. She danced in Peter Gabriel’s concerts when she was only sixteen and always felt comfortable on stage. As a teenager, Dinky grew up listening to bands like Cocteau Twins, Depeche Mode, Prince and The Cramps as well as classical and contemporary composers like Brian Eno and Eric Satie. In the mid nineties she was introduced to electronic music, thanks to her sister who was living in Berlin. Artists like Plastikman , Aphex Twin and Carl Craig where the first ones to fill her record collection.

In 1994, Dinky met Ricardo Villalobos, Dandy Jack, Atom Heart, Luciano and many other musicians that where somehow related to Chile, listening to them she got deeply fascinated by this movement. She was only a teenager when she first learned how to mix records but nevertheless, was soon being exposed to big crowds in Chile. Her first visit to Berlin in 1994 gave her the chance to experience clubs like E werk and Tresor and also to listen to DJs like Hell, Stacey Pullen and Sven Vaeth. This gave her great inspiration from the start.

In the late nineties, Dinky moved from Santiago to Manhattan to join the Martha Graham School of Contemporary dance. As well as being involved in the Dance scene she also got into the NY Club scene, discovering American house and Detroit techno, polishing her DJing and soon making a name in the underground scene. The same year Dinky made her first visit to a recording studio where she composed a track together with her friend Jorge Gonzales, a Chilean pop star with whom she is still working now.

Shortly after that, she decided to write her own music and while only 23 was signed to the label Traum Schaallplatten where she recorded many singles and an album CD. As a result, Dinky got the attention from the German press and for the first time was invited to tour Europe and soon after to be part of the “famous friends tour” with Miss Kittin in America.

Dinky soon became one of the most popular female DJs in NYC. As well as DJing, producing and working in record stores she also ran her party in the heart of Chinatown together with her friend Magda. In 2003 dinky finished her second album Black Cabaret which got a lot of coverage from the media, unfortunately, at the same time she was forced to leave the US due to the post 11 new visa regulations. Soon after, she decided to move to Berlin.

In 2005 Dinky got signed by Sven Vaeth imprint Cocoon records, with her massive hit “Acid in my Fridge” burning dancefloors all over the world. The single became a top seller and was rapidly signed to international compilations like Ministry of Sound and Fabric and featured in mix compliations from Timo Mass, Toni Rios and Death in Vegas etc. Due to this success Vaeth asked her to be part of the Amnesia Ibiza campaign alongside himself, Miss Kittin, and Villalobos and also asked her to record the Cocoon Mix CD for the 6th season.

That year, Dinky played the opening party with Vaeth and remained a resident of the season achieving great popularity and respect worldwide. Alejandra has a very busy schedule and lives on tour, she has played Live at international festivals like Sonar, Ten days off, Sonne Mond Stern, Mutek and has DJed in clubs like The End, Cocoon, Privilege, Dc10 and Amnesia to name a few.

Dinky is also supported by the Circo Loco crew and has a large fan base in Italy and Ibiza. She currently has a residency at the famous Berlin club “Panorama Bar” and has recently founded her label Horizontal which has been getting lots of attention from the media and has also been licensed by the top labels Cocoon, Minus and Resist.

Currently Dinky is recording her album for Cross Town Rebels (UK) focusing on her label and continuing her usual touring. As a DJ Dinky can rock small underground clubs to massive arenas, her technique has impressed many crowds and her style reminds fresh and exiting without limiting herself to only one line. Her sets can range from house to deep minimal techno, experimental, old school and even funk and soul.

ABOUT BOOTIE MASHUP
Launched in 2003 in San Francisco by A Plus D, aka DJs Adrian & Mysterious D, Bootie was the first club night in the U.S. dedicated solely to the burgeoning artform of the bootleg mashup — and is now the biggest mashup event in the world, with regular parties in several cities on four continents, and various one-offs around the globe. Mixing and matching every musical genre, era, and style into one big dance party where everyone feels welcome, Bootie provides the soundtrack for the A.D.D. generation — with free mashup CDs given away like candy!

Bootie’s DJs (and SF house band Smash-Up Derby) keep your brain guessing and body dancing with creative song combinations, celebrating — and satirizing — the many different forms of music. Bootie also presents the infamous Midnight Mashup Show, featuring drag and burlesque performers as well as singers. Bootie showcases the best mashup productions from around the world … because one song at a time just isn’t enough!

THE MUSIC
So what’s a mashup? What’s a bootleg?
It’s pretty much all the same. Also known as “bastard pop,” a bootleg is a song that’s “mashed-up.” Usually, this means the vocal track of one song is mixed over the instrumentation of another. Using audio editing software, DJs and mashup artists combine different artists and musical genres to create new and unique songs that are often greater than the sum of their parts. Imagine Michael Jackson rocking out with Nirvana, David Bowie crooning with MGMT, Madonna fronting Daft Punk, or Kanye West rapping with Beethoven, and many other unexpected combinations! Can’t imagine that? Then get your ass to Bootie to hear for yourself!
Is this legal?
Does the skull-and-crossbones in our logo mean anything to you?
So where can I get these mashups?
Since 99.999% of all mashups aren’t legally cleared by the artists, you can’t just go to a store and buy them. However, MP3s of these bootleg mixes are available all over the internet. Click on some of the links to find some for yourself!

Or, just come to Bootie and get one of our mashup mix CDs, which we give away for free every month!

Streaming MP3, Cadenza Podcast 021 – Frivolous (Cycle & Source). Released by Cadenza Music on May 23, 2012.

Today’s Source To Cycle podcast comes from Frivolous, one of Cadenza’s more eccentric family members. Cadenza fans will know Frivolous from his debut album ‘Meteorology’, which was released on Cadenza in February 2011 complete with its club hits ‘Wasting Time’, ‘Back Into The Deep’, and ‘Cryin”. Many will also know him from his live club spectacles, which features live keyboards and vocals, as well as a number of his own homemade devices/instruments including the Frivolous Patented Electromagnetic Knife, the Broken-Ruler Music Box, and the Double Cable-Tub Bass.

Frivolous aka Daniel Gardner is certainly unconventional. His recent Random Cuts video episode gave us great insight into how his wonky mind works, and you can hear his warped sensibilities on his Source To Cycle podcast.

His Cycle mix is multi-layered DJ set, that moves through many grades of light and darkness, humour and authenticity, energy and serenity. Beginning with the Nicolas Jaar Remix of Azari and III’s ‘Into The Night’, we arrive at tracks by Maceo Plex, Subb-an, Mehrnoosh, Savage Skulls, and Zepp001. The full of synths and unusual house rhythms, live drums and warped vocals, and is fittingly fun.

Of course with this being Frivolous, there was bound to be a nice surprise or two, and instead of doing a straight up mix of his favourite ever tracks for his Source, Frivolous decided to create a special chronological history of his musical influences since 1989, by weaving in news reel sounds from the era of the tracks that he included, as a way to create a sense of time and space. It is certainly an effective way to tell a story, and it’s also rather educational. The Human League, Depeche Mode, Nirvana, Goldie, Daft Punk and Isolee all make it into the mix.

“The news reel sounds were a lot harder to find that I initially thought,” says Frivolous with a grin, although Daniel Gardner is not the kind of dude who walks away from a wacky idea without an enlightening result.

Cadenza Podcast 020 – Massimo Di Lena (Cycle & Source)

Streaming MP3 – Released by: Cadenza Music
Release date: May 16, 2012

Italy’s Massimo Di Lena, or Massi DL as he is sometimes known, had an explosive debut on Cadenza at the tail end of 2009 with the four track EP ‘Gypsytown’.

Since then the Neapolitan artist has been active in the studio releasing cuts on labels such as Claque Musique, Oslo, and Cynosure.

His style is not easy to pinpoint. Whilst his Cadenza EP featured a mixture of dirty Chicago grooves (Raw Track), low-slung percussion (9991 Highway), and synth-driven melodies (Gypsytown), he is also a big fan of classic techno and house – in 2010 he remixed G-Man’s notorious 1999 loop techno hit ‘Quo Vardis’, and he is also known for sampling old house records under his Horatio project, which he runs with Rio Padice.

You can hear some of those themes on Massi DL’s Cadenza Source To Cycle podcast. His Cycle mix is primarily driven by synthesizers, that are sometimes electronic and foreboding, at other times they are subtle and melodic. There’s a wealth of influences in his mix, including some standout classic house vocal moments, as well as some bubbly techno beats, and one or two dirty thumping kick-bass combos. There’s a hefty amount of Chicago rhythms in his mix too, but the nod to the past is always balanced out by a healthy dose of modern digital production trickery.

Cuts by Moodymann, Anthony Shake Shakir, N.Y. House’n Authority and Theo Parrish contrast quite wonderfully with basement friendly jams from Bass Clef and Fcl VS Vfb, and acid Warp madness from Africa Hitech. There’s a certain high brow alternative electronic feel to his set.

Massi DL’s Source mix is enlightening too, with its journey through downtempo, soulful pop, funk, and euphoric electronica. His mix includes cuts from Modeselektor, A Tribe Called Quest, Mr Scruff, Prefuse, Fatima, J Dilla and Liquid Liquid.
