All day he dreams.

Dutch producer Matthew Dekay came to prominence during the early- to mid-’00s as purveyor of club-ready progressive house. His tracks betrayed a melodic sensibility that came from his background as a trained classical musician. Dekay released a string of 12-inches on labels like Deep Records and Electronic Elements during this time, never staying put on one imprint for too long. And then nothing. “I lost that special feeling with the music,” he said in past, explaining his three year absence from music production. When he did finally return it was with a new studio partner in tow—Lee Burridge. The pair scored a dance floor hit with the rolling house grooves of “Wongel” for Cécille, but it was with the formation of their new party concept and imprint, All Day I Dream, that they really found their voice. “Beautiful, melancholic, gorgeous house music,” is how Burridge explained the idea to us last year. ADID parties were set up at carefully selected outdoor spaces in Brooklyn and LA, while the label came good on its promise with standout tearjerkers “Fur Die Liebe” and “Lost in a Moment.”

The All Day I Dream aesthetic shines brightly on RA.342, 71 minutes of, well, beautiful, melancholic, gorgeous house music.

Matthew Dekay is a Dutch electronic music composer and DJ whose label All Day I Dream is responsible for pushing some of today’s most romantic, melancholic and emotional house music.

Matthew was first exposed to electronic music in the early 90’s while growing up in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Listening to composers like Vangelis and Terry Riley at such a young age paved the way for Matthew to grow up and become a classically trained musician with a strong fixation for synthesizers. Today, it is these two factors coupled with his never ending hunt for new technology, that Matthew uses to ensure his music stands out among his peers.

Following Matthew’s first official release on One Star Recordings in 2001, his tracks began receiving support from the likes of Danny Howells, Sasha and Deep Dish. This lead Matthew to start his career as a DJ, and by 2003 he found himself playing at festivals such as Extrema, Dance Valley, Sensation and the Berlin Love Parade, as well as many other clubs around the Netherlands. In November 2004, Matthew mixed the world-renowned Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1.

In 2008, Matthew moved to NYC and spent a summer season in Ibiza. This was where he fell in love with underground music again thanks to Ricardo Villalobos, and by the time he met Lee Burridge later that year, he knew he had found his musical soul mate.

Matthew relocated to Berlin in 2009, which provided him with fresh musical appreciation. Soon after, Lee Burridge came over from London to work in the studio and they finally finished “Wongel”. Nick Curly – head of the German label Cecille Records – loved it, and immediately signed the track to his label. “Wongel” went on to peak at #6 in the Beatport Tech House charts, and #1 on Resident Advisor’s 50 Most Charted Tracks of November 2010. The track was also included on the Cocoon compilations “Party Animals” and “Green and Blue”.

Matthew and Lee later decided to take their collaboration to the next step, starting a label together in 2011. All Day I Dream began with a series of four daytime parties on a rooftop in Brooklyn NYC, in the summer of 2011. By October 2011, “All Day I Dream 001” was released both on vinyl and digitally. “All Day I Dream 002” followed shortly after, and featured the track “Für Die Liebe”, a song which would later go on to become one of the biggest records at 2011’s infamous Burning Man festival. “Für Die Liebe” was licensed to Joris Voorn’s disc on the Cocoon compilation “Cocoon Heroes”. It also featured on the “Kehakuma” (Space Ibiza) compilation, mixed and selected by Nick Curly.

A second label, Get Weird, which was launched in June 2012, provides Matthew and Lee with an avenue to release the quirkier, late night sounds that they enjoy. The pair also have plans to extend their All Day I Dream parties further abroad, with a European debut set to take place during the summer of 2013.

After completing a metamorphosis through many styles and sounds, Matthew believes he has finally done a full 360, and has now been brought back to where he feels the most comfortable expressing his creativity – in underground music.

The dark side of Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow.

It’s been pretty much impossible to overlook the impact of Art Department these past couple of years. Toronto veterans Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow first came together under the name in 2010 and immediately demanded attention: “Without You,” the pair’s sludgy ode to heartache for Crosstown Rebels, became a ubiquitous anthem, ending up as RA’s track of the year. Any suspicion of a one-hit wonder scenario was quickly put to rest with The Drawing Board. The debut Art Department album, released in early 2011 on Crosstown, marked them out as leading proponents of the slow, bass-focussed house sound that was dominating the global club scene. With a springboard in place, Art Department began to tour. Extensively. As touched on below, they’ve played something like 130 gigs this year, and pulled off a similar number in 2011. The success of their recorded music has a lot to do with this figure, but if you’ve caught them at any point over the last couple of years you’ll know that White and Glasgow rock parties like experts.

We’re happy, then, to be able to present the more darkened underbelly of the Art Department sound. The regular hallmarks—low-slung bass, creeping vocals—are in place on RA.340, but it’s an overall deeper message that’s conveyed.

Art Department is the brainchild of Canadian techno/house Legend Kenny Glasgow and Canada’s fastest rising star and No.19 label owner – Jonny White. As individuals both Kenny and Jonny have released countless critically acclaimed records and are regarded internationally as two of the most forward thinking, revolutionary underground producers out of North America. Kenny’s credentials date back to the late 80’s and include productions on Narcotic, Jinxx, his own Method 11/11 label and Turbo. Whilst White’s revered No.19 Music label along side a blindingly fast – growing discography have seen him rapidly rise to the forefront of the international scene.

The pair, despite being close friends and stalwarts in the Toronto electronic music scene for years, had not joined forces in the studio until only as recently as 2009, when Damian Lazarus called on them to remix Riz MC for his prestigious Crosstown Rebels Label. The result was an entirely new sound that drew cues from the best of both artists. It was a futuristic and raw, synth-driven, underground masterpiece, the start of a new idea and the birth of Art Department…

Before long the two were working full time in the studio to expand upon what they had created but now with a new focus… the concept for Art Department was to create a live dj/vocal performance based on the new sound they were beginning to produce and would feature Kenny Glasgow’s unique and sublime vocals that had been heard only 10+ years earlier on records like “Pressing On”. It wasn’t long before Damian heard what the pair had been working on and immediately offered them a deal with Crosstown Rebels that would include several singles, remixes and a full length album due out at the beginning of 2011.

The momentum continued and Art Department performed their first ever live show at the Crosstown Rebels Get Lost event at the 2010 WMC in front of a jam packed room, along side an A list cast of 17 artists from the label. DJ’s, promoters and party animals regarded the performance as one of the most ground-breaking & important shows at this years WMC…Simple label boss – Will Saul was quoted saying “the live show was the best thing we’ve heard since we heard Mathew Johnson for the first time…”. The follow up performance came the very next night at Jamie Jones & Lee Foss’ Hot Natured party where Art Department treated the enthusiastic crowd to a mind-bending dj set and secured their spot as residents for the much lauded Hot Natured brand.

With massive support from the rebel crew along with an exciting release schedule including collaborations with Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones and Soul Clap there is no doubt that this will be yet another inspired chapter in the story of these Canadian talents.

The man from Miami.

Danny Daze’s breakthrough track, “Your Everything,” placed him at the vanguard of the slower, ’80s-influenced house sound that has come to prominence these past two years. It was two of the style’s chief proponents, Jamie Jones and Lee Foss, who first recognized the track’s potential, signing it to their Hot Creations label at the start of 2011. With its K-addled robo vocal, “Your Everything” went on to become the unofficial anthem of last year’s WMC; B-side “Fall Away From Love,” a more straight-ahead brand of anthem, proved equally as potent for those who flipped the record. The success at Miami was particularly sweet for Daze. The producer, real name Daniel Gomez, was raised in city and had been a part of its rave community as a DJ since the age of 13.

During any music-led conversation with Gomez, his love for classic electro is bound to be discussed—he’s most recently applied the influence on his rolling remix of Justin Martin and Pillowtalk’s “The Gurner” for Dirtybird. And on RA.334 the spirit of the sound runs rampant via music from Anthony Rother, Dexter, Legowelt and unreleased music from Gomez himself.

Maaaaaaan people hate reading bios. Real quick, started DJing in 99′. Would DJ weddings at 14 years old and use the money on vinyl for my rave gigs. Started making music in 04′ on a cracked version of Fruity Loops. Went to SAE to learn WTF I was doing and graduated first in my class of 13. Most of my youth was spent collecting vinyl and seeking out doubles to trade with others. My early influences came from Miami Bass & Booty music, which led to Electro & Techno. Started an Electro record label in 2005 which released white labels and official V/A double packs. Now I produce electronic music and travel quite a bit. Usually try to sneak in at least 5 hours of sleep a day. The main focus of my DJ sets is to make people dance, deeply commanded by Detroit Techno and Italo Disco. While my main focus in music production is to push myself & try something a bit different than the last session I had open. Thanks for reading. Have a great day.

The German selector sees in sunset/sunrise.

tINI is a key member of the Desolat family, the coterie of artists that has coalesced around the Loco Dice- and Martin Buttrich-helmed imprint the last few years. She got her start on the scene back in 2003, gigging in and around her hometown of Munich and eventually building sufficient momentum to gain the recognition of Loco Dice, who signed her to the label. Residencies for Fuse in London and Ushuaia in Ibiza contributed to her growing reputation in the ensuing years, both ideal places to absorb her brand of deep, groove-centred house music. tINI’s studio output has been fairly modest overall, choosing instead to make a statement in the album format. Tessa at the end of 2011, presenting 12 tracks that revelled in all percussive dexterity and textural intricacies we’d come to expect from her DJ sets.

“Minimal house” eventually became a beleaguered term, but in essence what tINI presents here is a masterclass in pared down house music; reminding us that when it’s executed with class and sensitivity, channelling the essentials can be truly compelling.

Resident Advisor: tINI
About, Biography, Events, Charts, Tracks, DJ Feed, Photos, RA News, RA Editorial

It took tINI only a few years of playing in clubs to become one of Germany’s most highly acclaimed female artists in techno and house music.

Her involvement with rhythms and beats started at the age of 7, when tINI, who is originally from Munich, began playing drums, while the curiosity and passion for sounds finally led her to first production attempts on her brother’s Atari. While her general interest in music has been aroused by new romantics, wave and grunge, her first dj adventures started with underground hip hop to rap. As her interest, knowledge and skills developed, her DJ style became more electronic when she stumbled upon Moodymann’s “Amerika”.

It was in summer 2003 that tINI started playing frequently in clubs and events in and around Munich. First DJ appearances throughout Europe and her first own nights and residencies followed soon.

In 2008 tINI joined Desolat and the Artist Alife family, after she caught attention of Loco Dice during few performances at the same spots. No doubt this was an initial spark. Becoming a constant part of the worldwide Desolat nights by that time, her profile assumed shape, while more and more clubs became aware of the curly haired talent with that powerful, vivid temper, who intuitionally knows how to enchant her crowd whether during smart-building warm-up or igniting main-time sessions.

“That’s right“, her production debut on the Desolat X Sampler in 2009, became a timeless groove monster with high profile DJs worldwide and a perfect proof that future is looking bright for this grand dame of deep twisted tech funk.

Residencies for Ibiza’s original Ushuaia, London’s in-demand “Fuse” events and Cocorico in Italy plus being the official tour support for Marco Carola on his worldwide album presentation were just a few highlights of recent months.
The most significant highlight of this unique career has been saved for autumn 2011, when her debut artist album gets released on her label homebase Desolat.

As tINI’s life is ruled by magic moments and deep acquaintanceships, her first longplayer has been named after her best friend “Tessa”, who was the first person to introduce her to the colourful, sometimes dreamlike world of Ibiza, where tINI spent the summer of 2010 and produced a majority of her album. It’s a musical documentation of an influencing stage of life, inspired by a chaotic but at the same time peaceful island and special people she met there and who can even be heard in many of the tracks.

Deeply. Impulsively. tINI.

Deeper house and techno from a UK favourite.

Paul Woolford is a DJ/producer who illustrates the difference between following trends and pursuing evolution. Woolford first came to light in the early ’00s as an integral part of Leeds’ Back To Basics. His sound—as demonstrated on releases for 20:20 Vision as Bobby Peru—was a hip-swinging UK variant of jackin’ Chicago house. Then in 2006 “Erotic Discourse” happened. The zeitgeist-capturing track was arguably that year’s biggest, affording Woolford new levels of global attention as he continued to hold down his summer residency for We Love Space in Ibiza.

However, like so many smash successes, “Erotic Discourse” seemed to be a blessing and a curse for Woolford. None of his subsequent productions seemed to quite measure up until in 2011 an adroit run of singles and remixes cast him in a completely new light. Carl Craig’s interest in Woolford was a large contributing factor—the Detroit veteran invited Woolford to tour with his Planet E imprint during their 20th anniversary tour and signed his Achilles / Razor Burn EP—but it was his flirtation with the UK bass scene that seemed to get the creative juices flowing most freely. Between his collaboration with Psycatron on Hotflush, Stolen, remix of T. Williams “Heartbeat” and support from Rinse FM DJs like Ben UFO, Woolford appeared to have turned over an enthralling new leaf. (Check his new material as Special Request for further evidence.)

The influence of the UK’s new school is patent on RA.308 although it always remains as an undercurrent to Woolford’s killer house and techno selections, which includes music from Actress, Claro Intelecto, Dario Zenker, Conforce and Kowton.

A soundtrack to an imaginary film.

What marks out Felix Manuel from the hundreds of other UK bass producers that have emerged in the last few years? At the very least we can say with some certainty that few have created an EP as good as Mountains. The 2010 four-tracker for 2nd Drop Records displayed a startling knack for sample manipulation, stringing out hip-hop, dubstep, techno and gabba to form a rich and cinematic whole. Gabba? Yes, gabba. As part of the Yardcore crew on Sub.fm, Manuel became schooled in the quickest of club genres—breakcore, ghettotech, drum & bass—and continues to dabble with tear-out styles during his far-reaching DJ sets. Jazz is a further touchstone of Manuel’s sound, particularly (or perhaps specifically) in terms of his recorded output. His 12-inches for On The Edge and Smokin’ Sessions to the aforementioned 2nd Drop, have all been based on judicious samples, although Manuel is just as likely to borrow from classical music or an overlooked soundtrack.

That latter source is particularly pertinent here: in approaching RA.307 Manuel set-out to compose a “soundtrack to a movie that’s not been made,” freeing himself from playing to an imagined dance floor in favour of creating an atmosphere through tracks by Chris Watson, Herbie Hancock, Untold, Marcel Dettmann and plenty of his own matertial.

One of electronic music’s best-loved artists brings the heat.

There aren’t many examples of artists who are equally as comfortable crafting esoteric minimal techno as they are standing on stage fronting a band. Having been active on the scene now for over a decade, Texas-born artist Matthew Dear has come to enjoy a unique standing within electronic music by pursuing each of his sonic interests with equal vigour. Ghostly International and its club-orientated offshoot Spectral, the imprint Dear co-founded with Sam Valenti IV at the end of the ’90s, has been the platform for most of these explorations. Countless 12-inches either under his own name or as Audion—the alias Dear frequently donned to delve into more rank strains of techno—have been put out through the label, while Minus/Plus 8 was also a regular home for his False moniker during the mid-’00s. It was in 2007 that Dear made the formative steps towards the artist we now know. The warmly received Asa Breed album saw Dear stepping out front and centre with his Big Hands band, turning to an electronic pop sound which would continue three years later on the equally as impressive Black City.

Dear says below that he “didn’t want to think about trends” when recording RA.306, and the result is a mix that, true to his word, sounds suspended between time and genre; music from DJ Bone, Planetary Assault Systems, Radio Slave and Gemini help him achieve this goal.

Expect an orgy of edits on the secretive duo’s mix for us.

What do we know about Tiger & Woods? Well, they’ve released three parts of an ongoing edits series that have surfaced through their own Editainment imprint. The squirming funk of “Gin Nation” has been marked as their standout track—one of the two cuts that made up last year’s Caddy Shag EP. They made their DJing debut at Robert Johnson in Offenbach late October and followed it up with a number of European dates throughout the remainder of 2010. And now we have this mix. Adroitly snatched samples are the basis for the duo’s trip through soul, disco, boogie and house music; if there’s a more feel-good way of seeing in 2011 we’d like to hear it.

Jazz, house, techno, disco, bass.

Floating Points is the recording alias of London-based DJ/composer/producer Sam Shepherd. If you’re already familiar with his work it’s likely that your access point was “Vacuum Boogie,” his irresistible 2009 track that despite its languid 116 beats per minute was among that year’s major cross-genre success stories. In understanding Shepherd’s approach to club music, it’s important to point out his background in jazz piano and composition. However, in this case we’re talking about far more than half-arsed Rhodes keys over a 4/4 kick. On tracks like “People’s Potential” the feeling was that a true dialogue had been struck up between the poles of Shepherd’s interests. 2011′s Shadows EP was as interesting an interpretation of club music you’re likely to hear. (And we thusly gave it a 5.)

Shepherd’s approach is also informed by his residency at London’s Plastic People and Eglo, the label he co-runs with Rinse FM’s Alexander Nut. (If you’re in London on Thursday evening, Eglo’s 3rd birthday celebration will definitely be worth a look.) In both cases he brings elements of soul, house, disco, techno and bass music to bear—and that’s exactly what you can expect from RA.301.

Soul Clap – RA Podcast 224

Streaming MP3, Release date: September 13, 2010
Posted on Resident Advisor

The Boston-bred duo provide a soundtrack of mellow grooves for the end of summer.

Get the ladies on the dance floor, and the rest will follow. It’s a simple rule. But Soul Clap’s Charles Levine and Eli Goldstein understand it better than most. Although funk and jazz were the pair’s first respective musical loves, they found a common passion in searching out disco, house and techno records at Boston’s Vinyl Connection store, where they were schooled by resident disco connoisseur Caril Mitro.

Itzamna and Airdrop were early supporters, but it’s their ongoing hook-up with the Wolf + Lamb crew that was the duo’s real tipping point, culminating in a series of edits that housed up the likes of Fleetwood Mac, R. Kelly and Stevie Wonder, which have become staples in their DJ sets. Recently, the duo have released their Action/Satisfaction EP on Crosstown Rebels following a tequila-fuelled session at Damian Lazarus’ Los Angeles abode, and when they’re not in the studio, they’re busy either touring the globe, or in Berlin where they’ve recently taken up residence. Don’t go expecting much techno on their mix for this week’s RA podcast, however, as Eli and Charles have crafted a soundtrack to the end of summer—a special sun-kissed selection of tracks and exclusive edits that will no doubt fuel the dance floor when they play at this year’s RA party at ADE.
